Sierra Leone's mining and petroleum sector has made a significant recovery since the end of the 11-year civil war in 2002. Mining accounted for about 30% of GDP in 2007 and 80% of exports in 2008, with diamonds contributing 85% of that total. A new Mining and Minerals Law was signed in 2009, marking important progress towards improved sector governance and legal reforms. After a delay in its implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative during the 2007 elections, EITI efforts have recommenced and continue to move forward, albeit slowly.

EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES

Sierra Leone is endowed with vast and varied mineral resources, including diamonds, gold, rutile, ilmenite, zircon, iron ore and bauxite. The country does not produce any petroleum at the moment, but in September 2009, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation announced an offshore discovery and evaluation of this well to determine the quantity of oil and its commercial viability is ongoing.
