A new study on natural resource management in Vietnam finds significant improvements in the mining sector, but persistent challenges in areas such as oversight and production efficiency. The study by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and civil society group Consultancy on Development explores the state of the country's oil, gas and mining industries and the possibilities for joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
Vietnam is home to a rapidly-growing extractive sector; the number of oil, gas and mining companies increases by an average of 22% each year. However, the development of these sectors has been marked by illegal trading, wasteful production practices, opaque revenue management and poor oversight.
The report, which was conducted with support from RWI, includes interviews with government agencies, industry and civil society representatives. Nearly all respondents agreed that more transparency is needed in Vietnam and that EITI implementation would offer important gains for the sector.
