As the United States and other countries develop new financial disclosure rules for oil, gas and mining companies, Revenue Watch has posted a global calculator for comparing company listings and company value on 35 international stock exchanges.
This online tool, available at http://data.revenuewatch.org/listings, compiles Revenue Watch research on more than 2,500 publicly traded oil, gas and mining companies and offers a snapshot of the financial significance of this sector, per exchange and globally. The companies listed have a combined market capitalization of more than $14.3 trillion (€10.1 trillion).
Our interactive data allows comparisons of the 35 stock exchanges according to:
- Value in market capitalization of oil, gas and mining companies on each exchange
- Number of companies from this sector on each exchange
- Value of individual companies and name of each exchange that lists them
In many developing countries, natural resources account for the largest share of exports and revenue, but too often resource wealth also brings problems that actually hinder development. Oil and mining windfalls can slow the growth of other industries, and secrecy regarding company payments to governments can enable large-scale embezzlement and corruption.
In July 2010, the United States took an historic step toward addressing these issues by passing the Dodd-Frank Financial Reform Act. A provision of the law requires companies engaged in oil, gas and mining activities and registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to publicly disclose any payments they make to governments, country by country and project by project. The SEC is expected to issue final regulations later this year setting detailed disclosure rules for U.S. registered companies.
