Open Society Foundations and RWI Remember Photographer Tim Hetherington

Revenue Watch and our colleagues at the Open Society Foundations were deeply saddened by the deaths of photographers Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros on 20 April during fighting in Libya.

Tim Hetherington's images have helped RWI tell the story of resource wealth and economic struggle with greater clarity and a more human element than commentary or analysis can convey. His images from Liberia can be seen in two RWI reports, including the cover photo at right, taken in Monrovia in 2003.

Hetherington's work was featured in the Moving Walls 11 exhibition of the Open Society Foundations. In a tribute on the OSF blog, Documentary Photography Project Director Amy Yenkin said he was "committed to telling the story of the Liberian people. In covering war, he had the rare ability to capture the people fighting or caught in its crosshairs. We didn’t just see their faces. We came to understand them because he understood them so well."

Hetherington also directed the 2010 documentary "Restrepo," which follows the deployment of U.S. troops into a remote and dangerous area of Afghanistan. Both Hetherington and Hondros died after an attack on rebel forces in Misurata, Libya. Two other photojournalists were wounded in the same attack
