The international Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Coalition profiles the local PWYP initiative in Cameroon as it enters its sixth year of advocacy for transparent and accountable natural resource governance. PWYP Cameroon was launched in 2005 as part of a broader regional push, which also witnessed the formation of PWYP Congo in 2003 and PWYP Nigeria in 2004. Today, these groups are three of 20 national PWYP coalitions across Africa. PWYP Cameroon has become an important part of a national movement towards greater openness in the extractive industries.
In 2005, PWYP Cameroon successfully advocated for a more robust civil society presence on the newly-created Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative multi-stakeholder group. The coalition has embraced wide-ranging communications tactics, disseminating EITI information to citizens in multiple languages, magazines and even cartoon posters. In 2010, the coalition succeeded in ensuring mining figures were included in the Cameroon's EITI report—a step that is expected to offer great benefits to local communities. Read more from PWYP...
