RWI partner Grupo Propuesta Ciudadana has launched a new online map that allows users to locate and compare mining and oil concessions across Peru.
This map allows users to cross-reference information including mineral and hydrocarbons deposit locations; environmentally protected areas; indigenous and rural communities; and water resources at the departmental, provincial and district levels.
To encourage wider usage, the tool is designed with a simplified interface and for operation at slower Internet speeds. This initiative is part of a project supported by Ford Foundation, which is interested in promoting the use of Information and communications technologies (ITCs) for civil society advocacy and monitoring.
Example: Cajamarca and Conga Project

Online maps offer resource governance experts a powerful tool to illustrate the connections between mineral deposits, revenues and policy. In addition to Grupo Propuesta Ciudadana, other RWI partners in our research into mapping tools include Development Seed, which recently discussed mapping and transparency at the Open Government Partnership 2012 meeting, and the Carter Center, whose Congo Mines map helps users to analyze the mineral sector in the DRC.
