During 2010, countries across Latin America grappled with increasing international demand for their oil, gas and minerals, leading to changes in legal frameworks in several nations as well as social conflicts in communities where natural resource production takes place. This is one of several findings of a new trends analysis report by the RWI Latin America team and its local partners.
The report, available in Spanish, identifies the most important regional developments during 2010, based on our continuing analysis of local oil, gas and mining events and commentary. Among the key trends were government efforts to balance the search for international investments with the demands of local communities; debates over the future of Brazil's pre-sal oil reserves; contention over resource revenues in Peru, Chile and Colombia; a shift to service contracts in Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia; and ongoing social conflicts related to the impacts of oil and mining activity on the environment and public health.
