Data Tools

Revenue Watch is creating digital tools to enhance transparency and accountability in natural resource governance. Data—such as oil production levels, company payments to governments, government royalties and expenditures, or reports issued by industry, government or international actors—is the raw material that powers advocacy. But to date, citizens, lawmakers and investors have lacked ways to use sector information effectively to hold governments accountable.

As the U.S. and other countries develop new financial disclosure rules, RWI has created a calculator showing the financial stakes of improved transparency, by estimating the value of oil, gas and mining companies on each of the largest global stock exchanges. RWI's EITI data tool allows comparison, downloads and sharing of country report data and details of RWI's report quality analysis. RWI is also developing approaches to mapping extractive sector concessions and to improving the use of sector data as a tool for reform in producing countries.

RWI designs its data tools with a focus on ease of use by low-bandwidth web users, sharing through social media, and easy downloads of raw data. Strong usability gives advocates the tools they need to be both informed and also empowered for independent action.
