Publish What You Pay Liberia (PWYP-Liberia) is training its members to better understand Liberia’s second EITI implementation report, through Revenue Watch support funded by the World Bank EITI Multi-Donor Trust Fund. Members of the PWYP-Liberia coalition will use the training help them produce recommendations for improving future EITI reports. The coalition is also meeting with select members of the national legislature and holding public meetings with local communities to explain the relevance of the information contained in the report.
Liberia’s EITI implementation is relatively robust. In October 2009 it became the first African country to be approved as EITI compliant. It passed its own EITI law in July 2009, setting a standard for legislation that reaches beyond basic EITI requirements. Concerns remain, however, regarding the extent to which the government has applied the recommendations of EITI reports. Civil society groups have endeavored to coordinate their activities better in recent years and RWI’s PWYP grant seeks to help local advocates build on this progress.
PWYP-Liberia campaigns for transparency and accountability in the management of oil, gas, and mining resources.
