Policy Forum is working with RWI support to strengthen the capacity of civil society groups, members of parliament and the media as Tanzania works to improve resource transparency and accountability.
The Tanzanian government was expected to finalize a new legal and policy framework for the oil and gas sectors during 2011. Policy Forum is producing a technical analysis of the draft bill, facilitating discussion of the results with civil society groups and media outlets, and networking with members of parliament to communicate the resulting recommendations.
Although Tanzania's 2011 Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) report contained important information about the EITI candidate country’s oil, gas and mining sectors, the report contents were never made accessible to the general public. Policy Forum is summarizing the report, disseminating copies in oil and mineral-producing provinces, and organizing local public debates on how to translate the report’s contents into advocacy.
Policy Forum is also conducting media outreach calling for the government to draft EITI legislation, and organizing trainings for citizen groups, media and MPs to effectively engage in the EITI implementation process.
Policy Forum is a network of about 80 organizations that seek enhanced democratic, transparent and accountable governance and improved quality of life for the Tanzanian people through strengthening the capacity of oversight bodies to influence key policy decisions relating to poverty reduction, equality and democratization.
