Strengthening Civil Society in Burkina Faso’s EITI Implementation

Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Burkina Faso, through our fiscal partner Organisation pour le Renforcement des Capacités de Développement (ORCADE), is using the country’s first Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) report as a vehicle to strengthen civil society involvement in the EITI process. Through RWI support, PWYP Burkina Faso held a workshop for PWYP members and groups to develop recommendations for improving the report. The coalition also organized a national debate and workshops for CSOs in six mining regions to discuss the report, which was to be simplified and translated into local languages.

A 2010 workshop was held to foster civil society engagement in EITI and improve advocacy on mining industry-related issues. The coalition was created in 2009, the year that Burkina Faso became an EITI candidate country. The first draft government EITI report was of very poor quality. Although the second version of the report was circulated to CSOs for review, it became clear that they had not played a crucial role its revision.

ORCADE builds the capacities of citizens, particularly the poor and vulnerable, in order to promote sustainable development.
