Raising Stakeholder Awareness on the Importance of Implementing the EITI in Ukraine

In 2010, the International Renaissance Foundation (IRF) worked to raise the awareness of various stakeholders in Ukraine about Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) implementation. With RWI support, IRF wrote and disseminated a comprehensive EITI brochure and held a press conference to introduce it to the media. IRF also organized a three-day study tour for journalists and civil society representatives to the EITI Secretariat in Oslo, where they discussed the business benefits of implementing EITI.

Ukraine has shown willingness to reform the country’s oil and gas sectors by joining the European Energy Community (EEC) and announcing its commitment to implement EITI.  Civil society EITI advocacy is responsible for some reform activity, for example the Cabinet of Ministers’ adoption of the Decree on Ukraine’s Accession to the EITI. Nevertheless, the awareness of journalists and other civil society representatives remains too low to build on these efforts.

IRF’s mission is to work towards an open, democratic society in Ukraine by advocating the implementation of public initiatives important to Ukraine’s economic and social development.
