Peru: Strengthening Civil Society Participation in the EITI Process

Issue: EITI, Grants, Training

Country: Peru

Organization: CooperAcción

Although Peru was admitted as an Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) candidate country in 2007, it has not yet met EITI compliance standards. In addition, civil society organizations (CSO) that monitor the oil, gas and mining sectors in Peru put very little emphasis on EITI and its implementation.

With support from the World Bank Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Multi-Donor Trust Fund for Improving Civil Society Engagement in EITI Implementation, through Revenue Watch, CooperAcción is holding workshops to identify ways to strengthen CSO involvement in and political and private sector support for EITI. In order to bring Peru closer to compliant status, workshop participants are evaluating the first, substandard, EITI report in order to find ways to ensure that future reports are up-to-date and accurate.
CooperAccion is a Peruvian non-governmental organization whose work focuses on monitoring extractive activities that impact sustainable development. CooperAcción works with local groups, local government officials, small-scale mining and fishing communities and small businesses in extractive regions.
