Media Capacity Building in Ghana and Uganda

Penplusbytes (PPB) in Ghana and the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) in Uganda are using RWI support and technical assistance from RWI partner the Thomson Reuters Foundation to build the capacity of three cohorts of journalists to provide quality coverage of the oil and gas sectors.

In the project’s first phase, PPB and ACME are holding courses for journalists in Ghana and Uganda to deepen their knowledge of the oil and gas sectors, hone their journalism skills, network with civil society representatives and parliamentarians, and develop an investigative piece about their country’s context. During the second phase the journalists return to work but are linked for eight months to a mentor who provides writing coaching and real-time advice on issues that arise. Finally, PPB and ACME plan to coordinate scholarships and writing prizes for the journalists in order to provide the financial independence they need to undertake quality investigative journalism.

ACME and PPB are committed to helping African journalists achieve excellence and to improving mass communications in Africa.
