Facilitating Discussion on Exploring for Hydrocarbons in Protected Parkland in Peru

Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental (SPDA) in Peru is using RWI support to complete their analysis of how a proposed hydrocarbon project in a protected area of the Bahuaja Sonene National Park would affect the park’s biodiversity and the region’s economy. SPDA is then organizing a national workshop to present and discuss the results with experts, decision makers and the general public, culminating in the formulation of policy recommendations.

The Bahuaja Sonene National Park is located in the Piura region and hosts thousands of plant, bird and mammal species, as well as significant hydrocarbon reserves. A congressional proposal to designate almost one-fifth of the park’s lands for exploration and drilling was withdrawn due to public opposition, but the government has expressed interest in reviving the proposal.

SPDA promotes and facilitates the effective application of environmental policies and regulations by proposing specific planning and management tools and investing in education and training programs.
