Issue: Grants, Training
Country: Uganda
Organization: Association for Conservation of Protected Areas, Buliisa Initiative for Rural Development Organization, Navigators of Development Association
Three Ugandan civil society groups, Navigators of Development Association (NAVODA), Buliisa Initiative for Rural Development Organization (BIRUDO), and the Association for Conservation of Protected Areas (ACOP), are using RWI support to educate their community leaders about oil revenue management and land rights issues and to train various local actors on accountability and transparency advocacy. Each organization is organizing advocacy forums to identify environmental, socio-economic and legal concerns in its community and to link local groups to national-level advocates.
Most of the civil society groups working on resource issues in Uganda focus on capital, but NAVODA, BIRUDO and ACOP are located in the Hoima Region, which is the center of Uganda’s oil-production activities. The local populations these organizations work with are those most affected by the oil industry.
NAVODA’s mission is to promote sustainable development without compromising the rights of local populations. BIRUDO has extensive experience mobilizing local communities and building their capacities. ACOP is a network of local community groups and civil society organizations that advocate for the formulation of policies and laws governing protected areas in Uganda.
