Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) is training civil society groups on the technical aspects of EITI. With Revenue Watch support funded through the World Bank EITI Multi-Donor Trust Fund, they are creating the foundation for a civil society coalition that can effectively advocate around EITI and mining-related issues.
The government signed a contract with a Chinese company in 2007 to work the Aynak copper mine without any provisions for oversight. IWA is therefore analyzing the state and company commitments in the contract so that government and civil society can make sure the contract is properly implemented. IWA is also gathering information that helps civil society groups and other oversight bodies monitor the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the Aynak project.
IWA’s mission is to increase transparency, integrity and accountability in Afghanistan through policy-oriented research, the development of monitoring tools and trainings for the facilitation of policy dialogue.
