To help solidify coordination among EITI coalitions in the Eurasia region, the Soros Foundation Kyrgyzstan (SFK) organized the sixth annual regional EITI Conference.
Governments and international mining companies in many Central Asia and Caucasus countries do not provide transparency in their transactions or in the implementation and enforcement of their contracts.
Most regional nations joined EITI when it was established in 2002. Local coalitions have emerged since that time to share information and decide together on regional transparency campaign strategies. In addition to this ongoing agenda, participants at the 2010 conference addressed two topics for the first time: implementing EITI at the subnational level, and adding transit revenues to financial flows that must be reported under EITI.
SFK is an international non-governmental private foundation that aims to create conditions in Kyrgyzstan for building an open society by supporting the development of public institutions and initiatives in all spheres of public life. The Foundation is part of an international network, which includes the national Soros Foundations in over thirty countries.
