EITI Public Awareness and Capacity Building in Tanzania
In 2007 RWI provided financial support to the Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD) in Tanzania to build multi-stakeholder collaboration for promoting transparency in the mining industry in order to address concerns about oversight of local revenue receipts and expenditures for social services and development projects. Tanzania's mineral boom has sharply increased in recent years putting it among the world league of gold producers, and while Tanzania has not officially endorsed the EITI, civil society dialogues on resource revenue transparency are emerging and as such, RWI believes that the country is a prime candidate for civil society capacity building in this realm. The project emphasizes the multi-stakeholder, participatory approach, by proposing to work directly with companies and the government, which is an important priority for both the EITI and RWI; and the implementation strategy includes the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by all non state actors and a collaborative agreement with local government authorities, which should lead to concrete, longer-lasting relationships. The ACORD team will conduct a baseline study to initiate understanding of resource revenue transparency and will facilitate capacity building for partners on norms of good governance in the extractive industries, corporate social responsibility and citizen rights.

Our partners are coalescing into an indigenous-led network of non-governmental organizations at the forefront of the battle against corruption and abuse of the public interest.
Grant-making is RWI's primary tool for engaging civil society in resource-rich countries and is an important means to motivate, support and build grassroots movements that create sustained local and international demand for revenue and expenditure transparency.
RWI takes a comprehensive approach to improving governance and development across the entire value chain, from the organization of extractive production, revenue generation, and revenue management, and through to the expenditure processes and national development outcomes.
