ABOUT RWI / GRANTS

Asian National Oil Company (NOC) Investments Abroad

As Asian national oil companies (NOCs) become more competitive-due to a willingness to take greater political risks and accept lower returns-their activities will have wide ranging effects, from changing development prospects in host communities, to opportunities for rival oil companies, to potential new energy supplies for consuming nations.

To address these global market developments, RWI is sponsoring research with Chatham House to examine the impact of energy investments by Asian NOCs.

The main objectives of the project are to:

  • Develop a better understanding of Asian national oil company strategies
  • Create original, fact-based analysis of the impact of Asian NOC investment on host communities and on political and industry trends.
  • Improve management-level awareness within Asian NOCs about how their investments are perceived within host communities.
  • Equip host countries with the tools and training to effectively convey local development needs and governance issues to investors.
